DETAILS ABOUT THE CHOIR

Vision statement / Artistic goals: The Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus is guided by three core objectives: to strive for musical excellence, to provide a safe and supportive environment for our members, and to provide community outreach to the LGBTQIA+ and wider community

Voice type: SATB

Choir performs: Both unaccompanied & accompanied

Year Choir formed: 1990

No. of Singing Members - Currently: 50 Desired: Presently no upper limit

Musical Repertoire: Ranges from traditional choral music to contemporary, gospel and show tunes; accompanied by various instruments and some choreographed movements

Musical Director: Stephanie Teh

No. of years in current post: since 2021

Previous musical experience: Steph is a Life Member who joined MGLC in 1993 and was Assistant Musical Director for nine years; Steph is a conductor particularly known for her energy; Steph is also a talented arranger of some of the choir's best-loved songs: Never Gonna Give You Up, Rule the World, and about half of the choir's 2019 concert program, Rebel/Rebel (Annie Lennox and David Bowie)

YOUTH CHORUS "shOUT Youth Chorus"

shOUT Youth Chorus is a "chorus within a chorus"; shOUT Youth Chorus strives to provide young people between 18 and 29 with a fun, safe and friendly environment in which to develop their singing skills

Membership Fees: Singing Member $168 p.a. (conc. available)

 

JOINING REQUIREMENTS

Audition: Yes, a no-obligation open rehearsal, followed by an assessment which comprises short aural and rhythm exercises

Minimum Attendance policy - Rehearsals: Yes Concerts: Yes

Membership Fees: Singing Member $336 p.a. (conc. available); Associate (Non-Singing) memberships available

Ability to read music: Desirable

Sight-reading ability: Desirable

Examples of musical pieces performed: The choir sings a diverse repertoire of anthems, show tunes, popular songs, world music, folk, gospel, jazz, carols, madrigals, classical, religious and contemporary works which may be accompanied or ‘a cappella’
